Conducting rigorous research is only half the task. The other equally important half is communicating findings in a way that is clear, credible and fit for purpose. A well-designed study that produces poorly written outputs fails in its fundamental mission: to contribute knowledge, inform decisions, and drive change.
Every researcher would agree that the delightful end of the research process is publishing the findings to the relevant audience. This audience varies from the scientific community to the general public. Accordingly, writing products vary from monitoring and evaluation reports to scientific papers and policy briefs. Yet research report writing is a skill that is rarely taught systematically, leaving many researchers and professionals to navigate it through trial and error.
This course addresses that challenge directly. It provides participants with the conceptual understanding and practical skills to plan, structure, and write research reports that meet the standards expected in academic, professional, and public-sector contexts. Whether the output is a scholarly publication, a policy brief, a market research report, or an organisational evaluation, the principles of effective research communication are the same. This course equips participants to apply those principles confidently across all of these settings.
Participants should have some experience conducting or working with research before attending, though no prior formal training in report writing is required. The objectives of the course are to capacitate participants with the following:
After completing this course, participants will be able to independently plan, structure, and write a comprehensive research report. They will produce reports that are logically organised, clearly written, and calibrated to their intended audience, whether that audience is an academic journal, a funding body, a government department or an organisational leadership team. The course is structured around hands-on exercises throughout, culminating in a practical writing project that participants can apply directly to their own research context.
