Home Course Report Writing Course About the Course Conducting rigorous research is only half the task. The other equally important half is communicating findings in a way that is clear, credible and fit for purpose. A well-designed study that produces poorly written outputs fails in its fundamental mission: to contribute knowledge, inform decisions, and drive change. Every researcher would agree that the delightful end of the research process is publishing the findings to the relevant audience. This audience varies from the scientific community to the general public. Accordingly, writing products vary from monitoring and evaluation reports to scientific papers and policy briefs. Yet research report writing is a skill that is rarely taught systematically, leaving many researchers and professionals to navigate it through trial and error. This course addresses that challenge directly. It provides participants with the conceptual understanding and practical skills to plan, structure, and write research reports that meet the standards expected in academic, professional, and public-sector contexts. Whether the output is a scholarly publication, a policy brief, a market research report, or an organisational evaluation, the principles of effective research communication are the same. This course equips participants to apply those principles confidently across all of these settings. Course Objectives Participants should have some experience conducting or working with research before attending, though no prior formal training in report writing is required. The objectives of the course are to capacitate participants with the following: Understanding the research report landscape: Participants will develop a clear understanding of the purpose and significance of research reports across different contexts (academic, business, policy, and public sector) and the ethical principles that govern responsible research communication. They will understand the relationship between a research protocol and a research report, and become familiar with the range of report formats, including infographic reports. They will learn the language of report writing. Structuring a research report: Participants will develop proficiency in the generic structure of a research report and understand the specific purpose of each section. They will craft effective titles, abstracts, and introductions, and write literature reviews that establish a meaningful context for the research. They will learn to develop a clear background section, including a review of their research questions and objectives, and to produce a detailed and well-organised methods section. Presenting and interpreting findings: Participants will learn to interpret and present research findings clearly and objectively, construct coherent results and discussion sections, and integrate visuals, tables, and charts to enhance the communication of data. They will draw well-founded conclusions, develop actionable recommendations, and understand how to frame implications for different audiences. Ethics, referencing and research communication: Participants will engage with the ethical considerations specific to research reporting — including transparency, accuracy, authorship, acknowledgements, and the responsible dissemination of findings. They will apply appropriate referencing conventions and develop the skills to tailor their reports to diverse audiences and publication contexts. Course Outcomes After completing this course, participants will be able to independently plan, structure, and write a comprehensive research report. They will produce reports that are logically organised, clearly written, and calibrated to their intended audience, whether that audience is an academic journal, a funding body, a government department or an organisational leadership team. The course is structured around hands-on exercises throughout, culminating in a practical writing project that participants can apply directly to their own research context.
