Despite its value, many researchers approach qualitative research with hesitation, perceiving it as subjective, unstructured, or methodologically difficult to defend. These perceptions are largely unfounded. Rigorous qualitative research follows systematic procedures for data collection, analysis, and interpretation. When conducted well, it produces findings that are credible, transferable, and deeply informative. Whether used independently or as part of a mixed-methods design, qualitative research adds a dimension of understanding that strengthens both the depth and the credibility of the overall research endeavour. This course demystifies qualitative research. It equips participants with the conceptual foundation, practical skills and ethical awareness needed to design and conduct rigorous qualitative studies. Course Objectives Qualitative research demands a particular set of skills. The objectives of this course are to equip participants with the following knowledge and skills. Foundations of qualitative research: Participants will develop a clear understanding of the qualitative research paradigm, including its assumptions, strengths and applications. They will address common concerns about validity and credibility in qualitative research, and understand qualitative inquiry as an iterative and fluid process. Qualitative data collection methods: Participants will learn major qualitative data collection approaches, including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participant observation and participatory methods. They will learn data collection tools appropriate to their research context and understand how triangulation and mixed-methods approaches can strengthen their research design. Ethics in qualitative research: Participants will learn about the issues of power, privilege, and positionality in the research relationship. They will examine the ethical principles governing qualitative research, including some comparison with quantitative research ethics. Qualitative data analysis and reporting: Participants will develop practical skills in qualitative data analysis, including coding, thematic analysis, and communicating qualitative findings clearly, accurately, and in a manner appropriate to their audience. Course Outcomes Qualitative research is only as credible as the rigour with which it is designed and conducted. Home Course Quantitative Research Methodology Course About the Course Quantitative research is the backbone of evidence generation across virtually every field of professional and academic inquiry, including health and epidemiology, economics, education and the social sciences. It provides the structured, systematic basis on which decisions are made, interventions are evaluated, and knowledge is advanced. Yet many researchers and postgraduate students who engage with quantitative methods lack a coherent understanding of the full research process. This course addresses that gap. This course provides a rigorous grounding in quantitative research methodology from inception to completion, covering the design of studies, the operationalisation of research questions, the collection and management of data, and the analysis and reporting of findings. Participants will also develop the critical appraisal skills needed to engage meaningfully with published research and apply evidence appropriately in their own professional and academic contexts. Home Course Comprehensive Research Methodology Course About the Course Conducting high-quality research requires more than familiarity with data collection techniques or a few statistical tests. It demands a coherent understanding of the entire research process, from the conceptualisation of a research question through to the design, execution, analysis and communication of findings. A lack of this end-to-end understanding often produces work that is methodologically weak, difficult to defend and limited in its contribution to knowledge and practice. This course provides a comprehensive grounding in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, equipping participants with the skills to design rigorous studies, collect and analyse data appropriately, and interpret and communicate findings with confidence. Participants will also develop the critical appraisal skills needed to evaluate published research and apply evidence meaningfully in their own professional and academic contexts. The course is structured to reflect the actual research process, moving from design and planning through implementation to synthesis and integration. It combines CESAR’s quantitative and qualitative research methodology courses into a single, coherent programme. When the two are integrated, the result is a more complete and nuanced understanding of complex research questions. Participants who have specific methodological interests may also choose to attend either component separately.
